Episode 13: Oral Health Do’s & Don’ts

Toothpaste is something we all use pretty much daily, but that we don’t give much thought to, regardless of how many times we have heard the tagline “4/5 Dentists Recommend…”. Yet two of the ingredients that are of dubious benefit in toothpaste are triclosan and sodium fluoride. Triclosan is an antibacterial agent that has become ubiquitous in many personal care products that share the anti-bacterial moniker. As mentioned in episode 6 on gut & skin flora, anything that interrupts the balance of this flora in a dramatic way, will also impair our immunity, which, thanks to these products, is becoming all too common. Sodium Fluoride is dubbed as essential to the enamel health of our teeth, yet there are some concerns regarding its overuse that bear mentioning. The mouth is a highly vascular place, which means that it has a large blood supply as a result of the high volume of veins and arteries present. What this means is that there will be a large amount of fluoride ion absorbed as a result. Two of the essential glands that are affected by this are the pineal gland (which secretes melatonin to make you sleep) and your thyroid (which drives your metabolism with the aid of iodine). Fluoride ion is a proven endocrine disruptor that impairs these two functions. In addition, if fluoride toothpaste is swallowed regularly (as children do fairly frequently), it will result in ulcerative colitis, which will also affect your immune system.

So what is the intervention you ask? Simply use a brand of toothpaste that is fluoride and triclosan free (there are lots of brands available in the supermarket). In addition, lower your high glycemic carbohydrate consumption (think candy and soft drinks).
